Beetles are less common household pests. However, when they are actually in your home, that is something that you should be worried about as they are capable of causing significant damage. Listed below are the different types of beetles and the species that are likely to invade your home.

  • Wood-boring beetles – pests such as these can be found all over the United States. They are noteworthy as they cause damage to furniture and structural wood in homes and buildings.
  • False powderpost beetle;
  • Deathwatch beetle;
  • Sawtoothed grain beetle;
  • Confused flour beetle;
  • Black carpet beetle;
  • Stink beetles – they are often found in the western part of the country. Known as “occasional invaders,” they often wander into buildings and homes during warmer months. Although they are nuisance pests, they do no harm to pets or humans.

Beetle Identification

Beetles are identified by their shell-like bodies that appear to have lines running across their backs. You’ll find beetles that are of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Despite their appearance, beetles don’t have shells as bodies. Their wings that are hardened are the ones that create the shell appearance. The identification of a beetle is somehow difficult as you can only see the damage it has caused before you actually see the insect itself.

Beetle Control Techniques

Keeping these insects out of your property completely can be difficult because of their size. But, don’t lose hope as there are prevention measures that you can take in order to minimize their presence and activity indoors. First and foremost, keep your house clean. We suggest you vacuum frequently. Make sure your food containers are all sealed tightly and trim flowering plants that are near door or window openings to avoid having adults sneaking indoors. If your home is already infested with beetles, call an experienced exterminator immediately for help.
